This talk is about co-incidences, and about design research. Specifically, it’s about a book project exploring Leslie Martin’s plan to demolish and rebuild London’s Whitehall in 1965; and about three recent design projects reworking buildings at Newcastle University, designed by Richard Sheppard-Robson and completed in the same year. The book offered ways to think about the 1960s buildings on Newcastle campus, and helped tell their story to an unsympathetic audience. And the design projects helped to puzzle through the values at work in the Whitehall plan.
The 2013 Thesis Symposium gathers students from each of the seven schools of architecture on the island of Ireland during a day long seminar devoted to the architectural thesis.
Contributions from practioners, educators and recent graduates seek to provide guidance to current students as well as discuss the role and value of the thesis to architectural culture generally.
The day also sees the awarding of the AAI's Maurice Craig Award for best final year thesis project.
Kevin Roche, one of UCD School of Architecture's most distinguished graduates (B.Arch 1945), received the University's highest honour, the Ulysses Medal on 28 November 2012 from UCD President Dr. Hugh Brady.
After receiving the award, Roche took part in a live interview with Shane O’Toole in front of invited guests and students.
